How to Connect to Your MetaTrader 5 VPS (Virtual Private Server)
Using a Virtual Private Server (VPS) can be a great way to allow your MetaTrader 5 terminal to trade 24/7 on your behalf…without running on your own computer.
Traders often love to use VPS solutions for the following reasons:
- No downtime — most VPS providers guarantee 24 hour a day uptime, eliminating things like power outages, internet drops, and so on.
- Fast execution — many VPS providers are closer to the exchanges where trades happen. This can make for faster execution times.
- No infrastructure management — if you’ve ever had to spend hours waiting for your computer to update, you’ll know what this is attractive.
- You can access your VPS from anywhere in the world — using Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), you can access your VPS anywhere in the world, and from any operating system that supports it.
However, once your VPS has all been set up and ready to go, you might be wondering:

How to Connect to Your VPS
I’ll be using ForexVPS.net as my example for this article. I’m not making any recommendations for this product — it’s just what I use and I’ve never had any issues with it.
If you want to sign up, you are welcome to use my referral link, for which I’ll receive a 10% commission, but honestly, these steps will work for the majority of VPS solutions you choose to use.
Step 1: Download Microsoft RDP
Most VPS solutions use Windows Server to run your MT5. The most common way to connect to remote Windows Server instances is using Microsoft RDP.
You can download it from here:
- For Windows
- For MacOS
- For Google Play (Android)
- For Ubuntu
Step 2: Get your RDP Link
Most vendors will provide you with a specific link to connect to the VPS they’ve provided for you. Typically, this will be some combination of URL.
For instance, ForexVPS will provide you with a link that looks like this:
https://www.forexvps.net/rdp/<ip_address>
Sometimes, you will actually get an entire RDP connection, with all the details as well. If you do, use that, as it will vastly simplify your connection.
Step 3: Get Your Login Details
As part of your connection, you will need the specific login details you will use to log in to your VPS. Save these somewhere secure.
Step 4: Connect to Your VPS
Using your RDP connection, connect to your VPS. In most instances, you will get a warning sign like the below come up:
The reasons for this are pretty interesting if you’re interested in how the internet works and certificates and so on…but I’m guessing your here to actually connect to your VPS.
So.
Continue on. Note that this connection is at your own risk 😅
Press…Connect
Step 5: Enter Your Username and Password
Enter your username and password from step 3 and press Ok
You Should Now Be In
At this point, you should now be connected to your VPS. Enjoy 😃
